Want to make a complaint? Go online

Younger UK consumers rank social media as a go-to choice for complaints, but email reigns supreme overall

A survey of 2,000 UK consumers reveals that social media now ranks as a go-to platform for making complaints about a company’s products or services. Commissioned by eGain, the leading provider of cloud and on-site customer interaction software, and conducted by Vision Critical, the survey asked consumers to rank in order of preference which communication channels they use to make a complaint. Channels included letter, email, phone call, social media, or web chat.

Key findings from the survey:

• Social media makes its mark - 5% of 18-35 year olds use Twitter or Facebook before resorting to any other means of communication.

• Email reigns supreme - 47% of UK consumers will go online (email and web chat) to complain about a product or service rather than choose traditional methods of placing a phone call (33%) or writing a letter (17%). Email proved the most popular channel with 3 out of 4 consumers selecting email as a top two preference.

• Generation gap - Despite the rise of the silver surfer, 18-35 year olds are almost twice as likely to use the web as their first port of call to make a complaint (61%) compared to those aged 55 or older. Traditional forms of communication (letter, phone call) become significantly more popular in older age groups.

Andrew Mennie, general manager of eGain EMEA, comments: “We’re seeing a distinct ‘butterfly effect’ as consumers choose to air their grievances on social media channels: a small number of vociferous users can have a disproportionately loud voice and viral visibility in social networks. However, we’d advise organisations not to panic and take a systematic approach in picking whom, when and how to respond.

“As companies look to go social, they should make sure to avoid creating a silo that is not joined up with other interaction channels. Integrating social media into a unified multi-channel service strategy and leveraging a common knowledge platform enables businesses to provide consistent, context-aware and accurate customer service and build loyalty. Moreover, this approach allows them to take explosive social conversations private in a seamless manner, and bring happy endings back to the social cloud.”

Copper Door Handles Reduce Spread of Infection

According to research conducted in the US by the Infectious Diseases Society of America, as reported by the BBC, Door Handles LTD has learnt that by changing from stainless steel to copper fittings could reduce the spread of infections by 40 per cent.

Health Trusts across the UK are facing a difficult decision. Door Handles LTD has learnt that evidence from the Infectious Diseases Society of America shows that copper door handles and work surfaces could dramatically reduce the spread of deadly infections. However, at a time when budgets are being cut and money is in short supply, choosing copper over the less expensive alternative of stainless steel is not as straight forward as it may appear.

Owing to the anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties of copper, door handles and work surfaces that are at least 60 per cent copper can prevent the spread of infections such as MRSA, influenza, E. coli and salmonella. According to research conducted in the US, as reported by the BBC, changing from stainless steel to copper fittings could reduce the spread of infections by 40 per cent.

Some institutions in England have already switched to copper, such as Trafford General Hospital, which has been MRSA-free for the last two years.
Door handles are also being targeted in other health c
entres across the UK. According to the website for Scarborough and North East Yorkshire Healthcare Trust, Bridlington and Scarborough Hospitals have introduced a pilot scheme of ‘infection-busting door handles’. The new door handles can be found in the hospital toilets that are available to the public and on a couple of the wards. The mechanism works by employing an automatic sleeve dispenser which covers the door handle in a protective film each time it is used.

According to Andrew Bennett, Head of Estates and Capital Services: “This is another initiative which demonstrates that the Trust is serious about infection control. Simple actions can have an impact on infection control but also on how our patients and visitors feel about the Trust and the hospital.”

As the UK prepares for another cold winter, such measures will be welcomed by health professionals and members of the public alike as they try to avoid contracting seasonal flu and colds.

The National Trust announces Powis Castle triumph in favourite walk vote

The National Trust has revealed that Powis Castle in Wales has been voted the favourite place to walk in an online poll run by the charity.

The castle's parkland was one of eight places championed by celebrities to represent the best walks that can be found across the nation.

Members of the public then voted online for their favourite as part of the National Trust's first ever Walking Festival, sponsored by PruHealth.

The walk round the grounds of Powis Castle was chosen by weather presenter Sian Lloyd. She said: "I'm absolutely delighted by this. I'm thrilled they've won - and deservedly so because Powis Castle is the best castle in the country."

Alison Dyer, the castle's Assistant Visitor Services Manager, said: "We are delighted to win the Walking Festival vote.

"It is a real tribute to the beauty of Powis Castle and the joy that many people receive from exploring our grand Italianate terraces, dancing statues and lavish herbaceous borders, framed by a beautiful red Welsh castle."

Powis won with 40 per cent of the overall vote. Croome Park in Worcestershire, championed by the singer Toyah Wilcox, was second. Newton Pool in Northumberland, championed by crime writer Val McDermid, was third.

Other places featured were Ham House in Richmond, chosen by comedian Omid Djalili, Mount Stewart in Northern Ireland (TV presenter Zoe Salmon), Wicken Fen in Cambridgeshire (archaeologist Francis Pryor), Windermere in the Lake District (polar explorer Paul Rose) and The Warren in South Devon (Adam Hart Davis).

The vote was organised as part of the Trust's Walking Festival which was held during the October half term. More than 62,000 people took part in walking-themed events at 376 National Trust properties across the UK.

Many more people took advantage of the mild autumn weather to go for self-guided walks on the Trust’s 250,000 hectares of land and 710 miles of coastline. The Walking Festival is now set to become an annual event.

Videos of all the celebrity walks can be viewed at www.nationaltrust.org.uk/walkingfestival.

There are also more than 700 recommended National Trust walking routes - including the celebrity walks and ideas for winter walks - available to download from www.nationaltrust.org.uk/walks.

Powis Castle is open on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day and every day from 1 March. Many National Trust buildings and all outdoor destinations are open throughout the winter. Visit http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ for full details.

Confused.com research looks into myths around the drink driving limit

Confused.com has revealed research showing that 51% of drivers do not know the legal alcohol limit. The research also showed that 31% of drivers are unaware that other factors such as weight, stress levels, gender, whether they have eaten recently and age mean that alcohol can affect individuals differently.

Tragically, 250 people were killed and 1,230 were seriously injured on British roads in 2010 by drivers over the drink drive limit. However, these findings show that just over half of drivers don’t know what the UK legal drink drive limit equates to in terms of alcoholic beverage and quantity.

Rebecca Clough, head of campaigns and communication at alcohol education charity Drinkaware, said: "Even small amounts of alcohol can affect your ability to drive. So the only safe advice is to avoid drinking if you are driving. If you are planning to drink when you go out, make alternative arrangements like choosing a 'designated driver' from your group of friends, plan your journey home by public transport or use a licensed taxi. For the facts about alcohol and driving, visit drinkaware.co.uk."

The research also showed that 13% of people have admitted to feeling tipsy when driving and 20% of people would be willing to chance drink driving.

Shockingly, 44% of people know someone who has been caught drink driving. 5% of drivers polled have themselves been caught drink driving and men have been caught more frequently than women.
In addition to the devastating consequences drink driving can have, Confused.com has revealed that a conviction adds up to 42% on a car insurance premium in the first year.

Gareth Kloet, Confused.com's head of car insurance says: "My advice is to not drink at all if driving. Without taking into account the devastating toll paid in terms of injury, death, a driving ban or prison time, a drink-driving offence can cause a driver's premium to increase or prevent them from being able to obtain insurance at all. There is no fool proof way of drinking and staying under the limit. The drink driving limit could be deemed as a myth because alcohol affects everyone very differently.

"If you do decide to drink and drive you are risking your life as well as others. Research shows that even very small amounts of alcohol significantly increase reaction times and therefore your risk of crashing. Take the safe option and either don't drink, or leave the car at home."

Confused.com is reminding drivers a conviction for drink driving also means the cost of your car insurance will increase significantly. To help know your limits whilst driving, the company is encouraging drivers to use their drink driving calculator tool.

How to beat the January sales!

Hunter Dunn, offers some top tips on how to beat the sales:

o Take stock of your wardrobe: Before heading out to the sales, take a thorough look through your wardrobe. Note down the items which need replacing or the gaps which need to be filled. Then, whilst shopping, use the list to keep focused, and stop you getting carried away purchasing things you don’t need, or won’t work with the rest of your wardrobe.

o Update classic basics with on-trend accessories: When it comes to buying staple sale items such as dresses, jackets and trousers, go for timeless, well cut shapes without any obvious references to current trends. Then, use accessories to bring in transient seasonal trends to create classic looks with a contemporary twist!

o Think big: It is better to buy something which is slightly large, on the basis that a good tailor can alter it to fit you perfectly, rather than waste money on something slightly small in the belief that one day you will fit into it!

o Invest in luxury fabrics: The sales are the perfect time to snap up some luxury fabrics, which, with the right care, are guaranteed to outlast inferior materials. Cashmere is highly coveted, and the sales are the perfect time to purchase some high quality essentials which will last from season to season. Silk is also worth investing in - look for simple, well cut blouses in classic colours that can become a year-round wardrobe staple. Also not to be overlooked is pure new wool – this can come in the form of everyday knitwear, traditional woven tweeds or contemporary wool crepes. The feel of the fabric should tell you everything you need to know, and will stand up to the rigors of everyday life without stretching or sagging.

o Don’t be tempted by a price tag: This truly is the golden rule - only ever buy an item if it is a shape and colour which truly flatters you. It may have 50% off, but it is not an investment piece if it languishes in the bottom of the wardrobe never to be worn.

Amanda Wright said: “Shopping the sales is a wonderful opportunity to get beautiful investment pieces at a fraction of the usual cost – but when January comes around its easy to be tempted by a low price tag and end up with clothes that will probably never be worn. This makes neither financial nor ecological sense, so it’s important to become ‘sales-smart’ and walk away with clothes that will look fabulous season after season by following these few simple rules.”

How To Spot an Investment Item

Amanda says: “Our aim at Hunter Dunn is to offer elegant understated fashion which will appeal to women who are more concerned with quality and design than transient trends.

“Buying in the sales is a fantastic opportunity to find investment pieces, and there are a few simple pointers to look out for, to ensure that what is being purchased is of a high quality.”

Turning an item inside out can tell you all you need to know about how well made it is and what you are getting for your money:

Lining
People assume lining is a sign of a quality garment, but this is not necessarily the case. Lining can make it easy for a factory to hide the quality of its work because you cannot examine the seams, the stitching or how well the pattern was cut. If your item does have a lining pay close attention to how well it fits, how the seams sit when the item is on and the quality of stitching.

Seams
High quality pieces will generally have flat pressed seams so that the item sits neatly against the body. Also, keep an eye out for bound edges - on a piece of tailoring such as a jacket, the seams will generally be bound along each edge to create a beautifully finished garment, so the inside looks almost as good as the outside.

Stitching
Check for smooth, straight stitching, and that the seams have been sewn accurately, with no bunching or puckering. Small, tight stitches are also a sign of quality workmanship as it takes longer, but ultimately helps the garments to retain their strength and shape over time and reduce the possibility of splitting and tearing.

The Hunter Dunn sale has now begun exclusively online, giving customers a chance to snap up items from DAKS, John Smedley and Mimi Berry at reduced prices.

SURVEY REVEALS ROBBIE WILLIAMS IS UK’S FIRST CHOICE TO HELP OUT IN AN EMERGENCY THIS WINTER

Bad weather will cause 61 ‘emergency situations’ this winter, it was revealed yesterday

SURVEY REVEALS ROBBIE WILLIAMS IS UK’S FIRST CHOICE TO HELP OUT IN AN EMERGENCY THIS WINTER

Robbie Williams has topped a list of celebrities that people would most like to help out in an emergency situation this winter. David Beckham follows closely with X Factor judge and Take That front man Gary Barlow taking third position in the poll.

Adrian Chiles, Eamonn Holmes and former Daily Mirror Editor and CNN star Piers Morgan came bottom of the poll, while loose lady Carol Vorderman, househunter Kirstie Allsopp and Apprentice star Lord Alan Sugar fared better in the survey.

The results of the survey carried out by Duck Tape have been released ahead of the bad weather that’s forecast to hit the country.

Bad weather will cause 61 ‘emergency situations’ this winter, it was revealed yesterday and people will miss work for at least one day as they stay at home to contend with repairs to the house or car.

Over 38 per cent of respondents say they hate the winter weather and a surprising 35 per cent of people say they make no preparations whatsoever to prepare their car or house for winter.

The study of 3,000 Brits shows many people will have problems with their cars over the coming months as they struggle to open car doors, find it hard defrosting windscreens and bump car wing mirrors.

While a fifth of people have had to claim on their insurance in past winters to cope with problems with the house or car.

Worryingly, the average person will break down at least once this winter, have two near-misses with other cars on the road, and bump their motor into another vehicle, wall or post once.

A spokesman for Duck Tape, which conducted the research said: “This survey shows that winter can be hazardous for British people, and it is tempting to batten down the hatches altogether.

“Driving in freezing conditions can be really scary and motorists need to make sure they are well prepared for all journeys.

“But the weather doesn’t just affect the car, as homes can suffer too with broken fences, guttering, boilers and windows.”

Other problems motorists face include having to abandon the car altogether forgetting the de-icer and breaking a windscreen wiper.

The survey shows unfortunate Brits will suffer from up to three different illnesses – ranging from coughs and colds to flu and sickness.

When it comes to the house, the average homeowner will have to contend with one lot of boiler problems, one garden fence blowing down and two instances of leaks to roofs or windows.

The Duck Tape spokesman continues: “As the bad weather hits the country in the next few days, statistics show we’re likely to encounter some unwelcome emergency situations.

Duck Tape’s first-aid kit on a roll is great for helping out in literally 1000’s of emergency situations making it an essential item to stick in your glove box or kitchen drawer to deal with any urgent temporary repairs or fixes around the house or garden, or while you’re out on the road.”

Two thirds of people polled reckon the unpredictability of British weather is why they tend to suffer more mishaps during the winter, and 54 per cent say it is harder to manage a fast paced lifestyle when it’s so hard getting from A to B.

Hotter Shoes reveals new collection of waterproof walking boots

Hotter Shoes has released its latest collection of waterproof walking boots and shoes, which are the perfect solution to help people stick to their New Year's plans.

With the turn of the year comes the resolution to reinvent, readjust and rejuvenate, and top of the list for many is to get fit and healthy. However, with the British weather at its worst, waterproof walking boots are a definite 'must have' to help people keep their resolve. What's more, Hotter has introduced extra wide-fitting ladies walking boots for the first time this season, offering additional lightweight, functional styles.

"It's a full time job hiding secret comfort features in our footwear - making our shoes look stylish and pleasing to the eye but saving maximum impact for when you put them on your feet," commented Product Design Director Paul Sayers. "So when we decided we needed to take one step further and create a weatherproof comfort collection we decided that GORE-TEX Product Technology was the perfect fit."

Hotter’s weatherproof collection of comfortable walking shoes and walking boots are perfect for walking, strolling, wandering up hill and down dale keeping your feet comfortable in warm (or cool) dry comfort, protected from the elements and at the right temperature. Each pair incorporates the ultra-thin GORE-TEX membrane which is sandwiched between the outer shoe leather and the inner lining so it can’t be seen.

"That's the beauty of GORE-TEX Product technology and Hotter comfort - you don't have to think about it to enjoy it because your feet are cosseted in comfort," added Paul. "The porous structure of the GORE-TEX membrane holds the secret to its success. Each pore in the membrane is about 20,000 times smaller than a drop of water so water can't get in. But that's not the end of the story because these same pores just happen to be 700 times bigger than a water vapour molecule so sweat and moisture from your feet can easily escape, keeping your feet dry and at a comfortable temperature - simple and effective."

Every material in Hotter's weatherproof collection, including linings, uppers, insoles and stitching is quality tested and approved to guarantee its waterproof promise. Even laces undergo stringent wicking tests to make sure that they do not carry water into the footwear and special 'bellows' tongues are designed into every pair to prevent water seeping into the shoe through eyelets. Shoe construction is fully approved by the team and a random sample is carried out both on site by Hotter and by the GORE-TEX Footwear testing centre in Germany.

Hotter's weatherproof collection of ladies shoes comes in size 3 to 9 with some half sizes and extra wide options in shoe Mist and boot Terra; the men's collection includes three shoes and two men's walking boots in sizes 6 to 12, with some half sizes.

A cool partnership

...and an icy igloo new year adventure in Finland
The Ice Co, based in South Kirkby, West Yorkshire, Europe’s largest manufacturer of ice products, and the incredibly popular movie Mr Poppers Penguins, by Twentieth Century Fox, teamed up to offer an ice cracking opportunity for one lucky family of four to win a fantastic Icy Igloo holiday Adventure in Finland.
When Twentieth Century Fox approached Paul Doughty, Managing Director of The Ice Co to run a joint competition to celebrate the release of Mr. Popper’s Penguins, it was certain to be a cool partnership, and a great opportunity to make the day for one winning family.
And as Twentieth Century Fox said “The Ice Co. seemed like the perfect promotional partner on this title as there is a great thematic fit with the Penguins! Within the film, Mr. Popper has to fill his house with snow and ice in order to look after his mischievous guests.”
The film, which was released earlier this year, is a contemporary adaptation of the classic and popular children's book, which features Jim Carrey and six Gentoo penguins: 'Captain', 'Lovey', 'Bitey', 'Nimrod', 'Stinky' and 'Loudy' based on their individual characteristics.
The competition winners will have return flights to Ivano in Finland, with two nights accommodation in a fantastic ‘glass igloo’ hotel with a personal hot tub carved into the ice outside their door, where the winners can look forward to chilling out on this very special holiday.
“There were a considerable number of entries to the competition, with the star prize winner, Mr Alex Steine and his family, from Ramsgate in Kent, being over the moon about their forthcoming trip to Finland. The Ice Co. was a great partner to work with and the whole process ran smoothly from start to finish.” added Fox.
“We enjoyed being involved with Twentieth Century Fox and in being able to offer such a fabulous prize to such a deserving winner.” Commented Paul Doughty.
Mr. Popper’s Penguins is out to own on Triple Play and DVD 12th December 2011”
And here’s another chance to win another really special holiday. Look out for the Ice Co Ltd ice bags from December - in the freezer section of your favourite supermarket and in most off licences - which will have details of how to enter our next competition, in association with Warner Brothers, to coincide with the release of Happy Feet 2, and the chance to win a holiday in Germany to swim with the Dolphins.

Make 'Money Health' your New Year's Resolution

It's not long until January 1st 2012 and you may be planning to stop smoking, try a new hobby, or shift any extra weight from all those mince pies.

Budgeting bank account provider thinkbanking is asking people to think about their financial fitness this January and to ditch any bad spending habits that hold them back. The New Year is an excellent time to take stock of our finances following Christmas and begin planning our financial goals for the year ahead.

Research from American Express gives an insight into how much more we spend at Christmas. It estimates that UK adults will spend on average £210 each on 'extra costs' during the festive season, which adds up to around £10.2 billion collectively.

So if you feel like joining the gym on January 1st because you've overindulged, why not take the opportunity to get your finances back in shape too? It's a great time to turn your back on financial bad habits.

A spokesperson for thinkbanking commented:

"Traditionally the New Year is a time for reflection on where we are and where we would like to be in the year ahead - and personal finances are an important area to make improvements in too.

"Many people find they've overspent at Christmas and people who have borrowed money will have to begin thinking about how to pay it back come January - as well as keeping on top of all their usual expenses.

"Mastering your money takes some effort and there are a number of practical things you can do. First and foremost, draw up a financial plan looking at all your important outgoings for the year ahead and draw up a monthly schedule of regular expenses like your mortgage and priority bills.

"It helps to write down the exact dates of things like your car insurance or road tax renewal and family and friends' birthdays so that you can budget for these expenses accordingly and make sure you've got them covered.

"If you plan to repay debt this year, consider 'overpaying' your debts where you can, which could save you a surprising amount in interest charges overall. If money is tight in the New Year, consider ways of living 'frugally' and cut unnecessary spending to give your cash flow a boost. You don't have to make huge sacrifices - shop with coupons when you buy groceries, for example, or car share your journey to work with a colleague to save on petrol expenses.

"It's a good idea to review our spending habits regularly so that we can identify areas for improvement. Take advantage of the motivation you may have this New Year and take charge of your finances so that you can achieve your financial goals - whether that's making home improvements, saving for a holiday or paying off debt."

Survey: Brits love their mobiles and gadgets more than their families – Endsleigh Insurance

I love my iPad, it’s the best thing ever…

The finding of a recent survey by Endsleigh Insurance suggested that we value our gadgets ahead of our own lives; office workers are twice as likely to insure their gadgets than take out life insurance.

In a new poll, office workers were asked whether they would be more likely to insure themselves, or their mobiles and iPads if they had an extra £20 in their salary. As many 28% of those surveyed would insure their mobile phone or laptop, compared to just 17% who would invest in life insurance.

When questioned further, respondents said that they couldn’t live without their smart phones and other gadgets such as iPads and laptops citing such reasons as:-

“I love my iPad, it’s the best thing ever…”

“My laptop holds all my personal information and photos, I’d be lost without it….”

“I couldn’t manage without my phone – I use it for everything, music, Facebook, and Twitter…..”

“If I ever forget to take my phone I feel lost without…..

The independent poll showed that the types of insurance that we were least likely to spend extra cash on were policies to cover jewellery (4%), travel (4%) and household appliances (5%). Interestingly people were twice as likely to take out insurance to cover the cost specifically for servicing their gas boiler, rather than cover the cost of repairing their fridge, freezer or cooker.

Will Brunwin, IFA Manager at Endsleigh, commented: “it’s worrying that many people are failing to see the importance of life insurance. It’s our responsibility to ensure that people understand that in the event of their death without this their dependents could be left with insufficient income to pay for not just phones, laptops and other gadgets, but significantly more important costs such as food, mortgage payments and utilities bills”

Full Survey results*:

What type of insurance would you spend an extra £20 in your pay packet on?

Mobile / gadget insurance: 28%
Life insurance: 17%
Income insurance: 15%
Pet insurance: 11%
Service insurance: 10%
Home insurance: 6%
Household appliance insurance: 5%
Holiday insurance: 4%
Jewellery insurance: 4%

Endsleigh Insurance has compared the benefits of mobile phone and life insurance (http://www.endsleigh.co.uk/Pages/life-insurance.aspx), highlighting just how much cover £20 can get you.

According to Endsleigh Insurance (http://www.Endsleigh.co.uk/gadget) to insure an iPhone4, an Apple Macbook, an iPad and a Sony Playstation 3 would cost £19.32 per month.

If a 30 year old male with a wife and 2 children were to spend the same £20 a month on life insurance, in the event of his death his family could receive a lump sum of £437,923 (Bright Grey level term insurance over 25 years, male age 30 non-smoker. The quote is prior to any underwriting from the insurer. Quote correct 01.12.2012**).

*The independent survey was carried out by Endsleigh insurance on a sample of 381 office workers, male and female, between the ages of 18-60 years old.

** The quote used was given for illustrative purposes only and does not constitute as advice. The need for life insurance will vary amongst individuals.

Be a Christmas Cracker, not a Christmas Pudding!

Everyone wants to have a good time over Christmas and New Year – but how to cope with all the extra food and drink? Is it possible to enjoy the festive season without piling on the pounds?

The short answer is yes! Jenny Craig has helped more than 5 million people in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand manage their weight over the past 10 years – and now they can help Brits too!

As Christmas approaches, the Jenny Craig consultants will be advising their clients how to deal with seasonal temptations. Here they share some of their top tips so everyone can be a Christmas cracker, not a Christmas pudding!

• Plenty of traditional Christmas Day foods are very healthy and low in calories, so fill up on turkey meat (no skin), sprouts, carrots, smoked salmon and fruit with a few nuts.
• Don’t overindulge in the roast potatoes, Christmas pudding and mince pies – fill up on the good stuff, just a little taster of these should suffice.
• Don’t be tempted to skip meals – start the day with breakfast. Six small meals and snacks throughout the day will keep dieters satisfied and fuel their metabolism. If people skip them, they’ll make themselves hungry and be tempted to eat more of the wrong foods.
• Ask people not to buy foodie presents – ask for other things that can help people feel indulged without consuming excess calories.
• No-one expects dieters to have an alcohol free Christmas, but don’t forget that alcoholic drinks can be quite calorific. Alcohol can also lower one’s resolve, leaving people more likely to say “pass the nuts and chocolate” – so just go steady! A good choice is a spritzer made with half wine and half soda water.
• Don’t leave calorie rich Christmas leftovers sitting around. Turn them into a new meal or give them away.
• Don’t forget to stay active. Taking the family for a walk is a great way to be active and spend great time with the loved ones. As well as toning and keeping the metabolic rate going, exercise can help to fight the extra stresses that this time of year brings.
• Don’t worry if one day doesn’t go according to the diet plan. Shake it off, think about why it happened, and then get right back on track.
• Everybody needs some ‘me’ time – but instead of treating yourself with food, try a manicure, a long hot bath or a long chat with an old friend.

Democracy under stress around the world

The state of democracy deteriorated in 48 countries during 2011
According to the EIU's latest Democracy Index

The results of the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Democracy Index 2011 show that democracy has been under stress in many parts of the world. The state of democracy deteriorated in 48 countries during 2011, out of the 167 that are covered by the index. In only 41 countries did the state of democracy improve, with it remaining unchanged in a further 78. In most regions the level of democracy, as measured by the average democracy score in the index, is lower in 2011 than in 2010. This deterioration was seen not just in emerging markets, but in the developed countries of North America and Western Europe. There was also a decline in the level of democracy in Eastern Europe and small deteriorations in both Asia and Latin America. These were offset by increases in the level of democracy in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and Sub-Saharan Africa.

According to Laza Kekic, the Economist Intelligence Unit's Director for Country Forecasting Services and main editor of the report, "2011 was an exceptionally turbulent year, characterised by sovereign debt crises and weak political leadership in the developed world, dramatic political change and conflict in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), and rising social unrest. It featured important changes in democracy, both in the direction of unexpected democratisation and a continuation of decline in democracy in some parts of the world."

The unprecedented rise of movements for democratic change across the Arab world a year ago led many to expect a new wave of democratisation. But it soon became apparent that the revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt would not be repeated so easily elsewhere and that democracy remained a highly uncertain prospect. Many MENA autocracies resorted to a mix of repression and cosmetic changes, although the improvements in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya were sufficient to lift the region overall.

More generally, global backsliding in democracy has been evident for some years and strengthened in the wake of the 2008-09 global economic crisis. Between 2006 and 2008 democratisation stalled; between 2008 and 2010 there was a deterioration across the world. In 2011, however, the decline was concentrated in Europe.

Results for 2011

Just over one-half of the world’s population lives in a democracy of some sort, although only 11% reside in “full democracies”. More than one-third of the world’s population still lives under authoritarian rule.

Although almost one-half of the world's countries can be considered democracies, the number of "full democracies" is low (only 25); 53 are rated as "flawed democracies". Of the remaining 89 states, 52 are authoritarian and 37 are considered to be "hybrid regimes".

Popular confidence in political institutions continues to decline in many countries.
Mounting social unrest could pose a threat to democracy in some countries.
Eastern Europe experienced another decline in democracy in 2011, with 12 countries experiencing a deterioration.

US democracy has been adversely affected by a deepening of the polarisation of the political scene, and political brinkmanship and paralysis.

The US and the UK remain at the bottom end of the full democracy category. There has been a rise in protest movements. Problems in the functioning of government have become more prominent.

Although extremist political forces in Europe have not yet profited from economic dislocation as might have been feared, populism and anti-immigrant sentiment are on the rise.

Rampant crime in some countries—in particular, violence and drug-trafficking—continues to have a negative impact on democracy in Latin America.

Erosion of democracy in Europe

In Western Europe, there has been a significant erosion in democracy in recent years. Seven countries experienced a deterioration in 2011; none had an improvement. The main reason has been the erosion of sovereignty and democratic accountability associated with the effects of and responses to the euro zone crisis (five of the countries that experienced a decline in their scores are members of the euro zone—Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Ireland). Most dramatically, in two countries (Greece and Italy) democratically elected leaders have been replaced by technocrats.

The near-term political outlook for Europe is disturbing. The European project is under serious threat and disputes within the EU are sharp. Harsh austerity, a new recession in 2012, high unemployment and little sign of renewed growth will test the resilience of Europe's political institutions.

The overall Democracy Index is based on scores for five different categories: electoral process and pluralism; civil liberties; the functioning of government; political participation; and political culture. The Index measures the state of democracy in 165 independent states and two territories, which account for almost the entire population of the world. Countries are placed within one of four types of regimes: “full democracies”, “flawed democracies”, “hybrid regimes” and “authoritarian regimes”.

Eight countries had a change in regime type in 2011. In four there was a deterioration and four had an upgrade. Portugal deteriorated from a "full democracy" to a "flawed democracy", a development that had already affected Greece, Italy and France in 2010. Ukraine and Guatemala regressed from flawed democracies to hybrid regimes, and in Russia a long process of regression culminated in a move from a hybrid to an authoritarian regime in the light of the cynical decision by Vladimir Putin to return to the presidency and because of deeply flawed parliamentary elections.

Tunisia experienced the biggest increase of any country in its democracy score in 2011. It moved from an authoritarian to a hybrid regime. Two Sub-Saharan African countries also moved from authoritarian to hybrid regimes (Mauritania and Niger), and Zambia improved from a hybrid to a flawed democracy.

Almost Half Of Britain's Dogs Can Expect A Special Christmas Lunch

Christmas is a time the whole family is together, a time to enjoy and cherish the memories made and it seems Britain's dog owners are taking this message to heart as a new survey reveals.

The UK's lucky canines can expect to enjoy the festive season as much as their owners as an incredible 49% of owners will be preparing them their very own special doggie dinner on the big day.

According to the recent survey carried out on behalf of Direct Line Pet Insurance, of the 1,021 dog owners questioned, almost half (49%) are planning to make a special Christmas meal for their dogs and with 46% planning a special family walk with their dog, it will soon be walked off!

Adam Whiteley, head of pet insurance at Direct Line, offered this advice to dog owners: "Dog owners going to the trouble of cooking a special Christmas dinner for their best furry friend are clearly doing so out of love and festive spirit. It's worth remembering that there are a few things dogs shouldn't eat at all, even on special occasions, as doing so can make them very ill or even cause death in extreme cases. Chocolate, raisins, onions, and added salt should all be avoided, as should sharp or small bones. It's a good idea to make sure that all food items and treats are stored well out of reach of pets, during the holidays and all year round."

According to the survey, 89% of Britain's dogs can expect a delivery from Santa left under the tree for them to spend the holidays enjoying.

40% Britain's dogs will have an average of £10 GBP on presents spent this year with a lucky 9% having gifts worth more than £100 GBP awaiting them.

Toys are the most favoured present of choice, but pampering with collars, leads and clothes also top the list of most desired presents.

However, with 26% of Britain's dogs enjoying chewing presents, it might be advisable to make sure Santa's little four legged helpers have someone keeping an eye out for them.

K9 Magazine editor Ryan O'Meara offered this thoughts on the findings, “The fact that nearly half of all dog owners are preparing to fully include their canine pals in the Christmas festivities is indicative of just how much the relationship between pets and their owners has changed in modern times. Dogs are now considered fully fledged members of the family and this research highlights just how seriously owners take that relationship. Dogs bring us so much joy every day, it's nice to hear that owners take great delight in including them at this special time.”

Festival Awards Europe Honour Michael Eavis with Lifetime Achievement Award

After 41 years, to win something of this magnitude is something to be incredibly proud of. To still be doing this after that amount of time is no mean feat
The founder of Glastonbury festival, Michael Eavis is to be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s European Festival Awards ceremony.

Each year the prize is dedicated to an individual whose personal vision and energy has propelled the entire festival industry forward in a dynamic, creative and positive way.

Michael is to be given the Lifetime Achievement Award because of his seminal role in the European festival industry. Glastonbury and its success have inspired thousands of festivals to be launched, and Michael’s own personal philosophy of philanthropy has been adopted by countless promoters.

Commenting on his award Michael said: “After 41 years, to win something of this magnitude is something to be incredibly proud of. To still be doing this after that amount of time is no mean feat,”

Michael will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Festival Awards Europe ceremony on Wednesday 11th January in Groningen, The Netherlands.

Speaking about the honour, James Drury Managing Director of Festival Awards said: “Since founding one of the most famous and long-lasting festivals in the world, Michael has dedicated his life to Glastonbury and the millions of festival-goers which have attended the event over its 41-year history. Glastonbury is the grandfather of the incredible festival market which Europe enjoys, and Michael is cited as an inspiration by almost every festival organiser I speak to across the world. This is why he is so deserving of this honour.”

TV, Tap Water and Teabags join ‘My Own Bed’ in Brits Most Missed List When Abroad

Nearly a third of Brits miss their own bed the most when on holiday abroad according to carhiremarket.com with the Welsh missing it more than any other region!

19th December 2011 – As over four million Brits* get set to jet off to sunnier climes during the festive season, it seems it’s not just the Queen’s speech and crisp winter mornings they will miss, according to a new survey by carhiremarket.com. Topping a list of what Brits miss the most when holidaying abroad is ‘their own bed’ (30%), followed by the convenience of tap water (17%).

The top five list of the most missed, revealed by the poll of over 2,000 British adults, also includes missing out on favourite TV programmes (8%) and not being familiar with our surroundings, with ‘knowing my way around’ coming in at number four (7%). A decent morning cuppa was also important to holiday makers, with ‘my own teabags’ making it into the top five (5%).

According to the poll, the Welsh seem to be a nation of home comfort lovers, with 40% saying they’d miss their own bed the most. Those from the East Midlands are most likely to be craving a good old cup of English tea (12% vs. 5% GB wide) and it appears that the true British pub lovers of the UK are located in the North West, as residents from here are more likely to miss their local pub when jetting off to another country (5% vs. 2% GB wide).

It’s the regular routine of the TV that those from Devon, Cornwall and Somerset areas miss more than any other region, with 13% of respondents in South West Britain saying they missed their favourite TV programmes when away - 5% above the national average.

Andrew Shorrock, Product Manager at an online car hire comparison site carhiremarket.com, comments: “Our survey really does show that no matter how appealing a hot and sunny destination might be, us Brits really do savour our home comforts. You simply can’t beat your own bed, a nice cup of tea or even your own car, according to 4% of men! However, if you are planning on heading overseas this Christmas, you can try and make every detail as much like home as possible, even by choosing a preference of hire car.”

Results below from the carhiremarket.com survey of what Brits missed most when holidaying abroad:

1. My own bed (30%)
2. Tap water (17%)
3. Favourite TV programmes (8%)
4. Knowing my way around (7%)
5. My usual teabags (5%)
6. My own car (3%)
7. Driving on the left hand side of the road (3%)
8. My local pub (2%)
9. None of these (25%)

Nigel Chadwick appointed Vice Chairman of Mobile Data Association

• Founder of Stream Communications takes on new role in MDA
• Drive to position MDA to all mobile data centric businesses

Nigel Chadwick, founding director of Stream Communications, has been elected Vice Chairman of the Mobile Data Association (MDA). Previously MDA director responsible for telematics and transportation, Chadwick takes up the role with immediate effect.

“The growth of consumer and business mobile data has been the story of the mobile industry for the last two years, but demand for machine to machine mobile communications will dwarf people’s use of mobile. The MDA should be the focal point for what will be the fastest growing area in mobile.”

Chadwick founded Stream Communications in 2000 to take advantage of the opportunities afforded by machine to machine. The company has been a leading innovator in providing fast, secure and reliable 2G and 3G connectivity between machines and has pioneered portal based SIM management and billing.

Mike Hawkes, Chairman of the MDA, said: “Nigel has been at the forefront of data communications in the past decade and we look forward to his enhanced contribution to the MDA in the future.”

In Rude Health Launches The Libido Survey

Online sex magazine http://www.inrudehealth.com/ is launching a study into loss of libido, which is the number one sex complaint amongst women according to sex therapists. Reports by Relate show a 240% increase in the number of couples seeking help for loss of desire between 1996-2002, and The Kinsey Institute’s latest findings suggest that women today are having less sex than their grandmothers.

The study involves an online survey in collaboration with http://www.procrea.ch/ fertility clinic in Switzerland. Participants are charting their menstrual cycle for 50 days noting peak days for sex drive to see if this correlates with a natural rise in luteinizing hormone (LH) levels at ovulation. Preliminary research at ProCrea has identified a link between high LH levels and high libido, which suggests synthetic LH could be a treatment option for women with a low sex drive. Fertility expert Dr Michael Jemec calls it ‘life hormone’ as it gives you energy, as well as helping to regulate the menstrual cycle and ovulation in women and testosterone and sperm production in men. Levels naturally rise with age, which explains why women have a higher libido post menopause.

Pleasure Parlour – Maca Party

In Rude Health is hosting a Pleasure Parlour on Saturday 4th February 2012 in Hastings. This is an opportunity for participants to get together informally and talk about the survey results, purchase adult products, and try maca root, a food that boosts energy levels, stamina and libido. ‘I’d suggest having a maca party if you are looking to boost your libido naturally,’ says Dr Jemec. ‘It has an LH-type action in the body and works as an aphrodisiac.’

New Santa and reindeer app launched by Rantmedia donates 15% proceeds to Action Duchenne

iphone and iPad developer launches festive app on iTunes store and donates proceeds to charity dedicated to combating devastating life wasting disease

Rantmedia has launched a Christmas iPhone & iPad app, Santa’s Sleigh Ride, with 15% of proceeds from sales donated to the charity Action Duchenne. The app costs just 69p to download from the iTunes store, http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/santas-sleigh-ride/id477668167
Action Duchenne is the only charity that campaigns for research and treatment of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).

The disease affects one in 3,500 male births in the UK, and is the most common and severe type of muscular dystrophy – sufferers are diagnosed as children usually by the age of five and rarely live past their twenties.
The app is ideal for gamers of all levels – easy to play yet highly addictive. Santa and his reindeer are in training for their annual Christmas Eve dash - travelling as far as possible through the ultra-festive surroundings. The duo travel past Christmassy villages, up and over snow topped hills, while avoiding the many seasonal objects that block their way.

Anton Faulconbridge, Director at Rantmedia said; “We wanted to use our expertise and skills to really make a difference to those who need it most. Our Santa app is a great way to have fun at Christmas yet also remember the true spirit of giving and charity. Our hope is that this app might go viral and raise thousands to support such a deserving cause as Action Duchenne’s.”

Young Saul Catlin, aged 11, who has Duchenne said; “Santa’s Sleigh Ride is a really cool app and makes you feel like it is Christmas already.”

Saul’s Dad, Nick Catlin, who is CEO of Action Duchenne commented, “We are delighted to continue to work with Rantmedia who has supported the Charity with their development of our Patient Registry and our website.

“For many families living with Duchenne, Christmas can mark a difficult time as another year passes with a decline in health. Our cause is striving to raise funds to find treatments and a cure for this devastating disease. Successful iPhone/iPad apps like Santa’s Sleigh Ride could generate lots of much needed funds, so we are calling on as many people as possible to download and enjoy the game and support our cause at the same time. ”

Tribute to the late Christopher Hitchens from the BCRPM

Christopher Hitchens at the launch

Christopher’s contribution and belief in our cause was a great strength to me personally and he will be sorely missed as one of our key supporters.
Tribute to the late Christopher Hitchens from the BCRPM

The British Committee for the Reunification of the Parthenon Marbles (BCRPM) today paid tribute to the late Christopher Hitchens who died earlier this week, for his keen support for the return of the Parthenon Marbles to Greece.

Eleni Cubitt, Honorary Secretary for the Committee said: “We are all deeply saddened by the news of Christopher’s death and we send our sincere condolences to his family at this time. Christopher’s contribution and belief in our cause was a great strength to me personally and he will be sorely missed as one of our key supporters.”

Christopher Hitchens is the author of ‘The Parthenon Marbles: The Case for Reunification’ and he attended the launched of the third edition of the book on 23 May 2008 at Chatham House in London. This edition is dedicated to James Cubitt, founder of the BCRPM and has a preface written by Nadine Gordimer.

Mr Hitchens felt the opening of the new Acropolis Museum provided the ideal opportunity to re-state the case for the return of the Elgin Marbles to Athens. When the new Acropolis Museum opened in June 2009, Christopher Hitchens visited and wrote an article, ‘The Lovely Stoes’ which was published in Vanity Fair (July 2009). His concluding sentence reads: ”And one day, surely, there will be an agreement to do the right thing by the world’s most “right” structure.”

Hitchens interest in the marbles began 25 years ago when he read an essay by Colin Macinnes, author of the 1950s novel Absolute Beginners, who had taken an interest in the Parthenon Marbles early on when no one else was really looking into why they were not returned to Greece. Hitchens, having heard nothing about them before, felt compelled to find out more.

He wrote his first article in 1983 on the subject in The Spectator and later went on to publish his book ‘The Parthenon Marbles: The Case for Reunification’ in 1987. In the book Hitchen insists the Greeks have a “natural right” to the sculptures, and that they belong on the hill of the Acropolis “in that light, in that air. Pentelic marble does not occur in the UK”.

The argument still hasn’t been won and the Parthenon Marbles still remain in the British Museum.

The BCRPM has asked its member’s, many of whom met with Christopher at the book launch, to send in their own tributes and thoughts, which will be put up on the web site in due course.

Confused.com reveals most drivers oppose road light switch off

Confused.com has revealed that the government's midnight switch-off of lights on UK roads, implemented since 2010, poses safety risks to drivers. As the shortest day of the year approaches, the car insurance expert reveals that 67% of UK motorists strongly oppose the switch off, with 47% of drivers feeling less confident when driving at night*.

Victims of the switch off currently include stretches of the M1, M2, M4, M5, M6, M27 and M54. These stretches of unlit motorway total 47.4 miles of darkness between the hours of 12 midnight and 5am**. According to Confused.com research, the biggest concerns for drivers are being worried about getting tired (20%) and not being able to see other road users (31%). 60% of drivers also don’t think that road signs are adequately lit at night.

According to research from the Journal of Sleep Research, these concerns are justified. Driving in the dark for just three hours can make drivers drive as badly as when drunk, with performance standards equating to the driver having 0.08% alcohol content in his blood - the national limit. By four and a half hours 'dark driving', these levels rise to 0.10%*** - shocking when one in seven people don't take any breaks during a four-hour journey****.

Although a high proportion of motorists are less confident driving in the dark, the younger generations find a lack of road lighting actually encourages risk-taking, with 27% of drivers under 24 driving faster in the dark, and the same percentage again feeling "more relaxed" to the rules of the road.

Julie Townsend, Campaigns Director of Brake says: "Street lights are an important safety feature on our roads, so it’s not surprising so many drivers are worried about them being switched off. There may be fewer vehicles about at night, but when driving in the dark it’s harder to spot other road users and potential hazards, and you’re more likely to encounter dangers like people drink driving. If we see more crashes as a result of lights going off, it means more families suffering needless deaths and injuries, and it’s a false economy, because these crashes are a huge drain on health and emergency services."

In a campaign to raise awareness of the risks posed to night drivers, Confused.com is petitioning for the Highways Agency to reconsider its decision to turn off the lights on some of the UK's motorways and streets. This petition will be presented on 31st January 2012.

Gareth Kloet, Head of Car Insurance at Confused.com says: "Our research shows that drivers find driving in the dark a frightening experience and a reduction in motorway and street lighting exaggerates this. The safety of road users should still remain top priority - the government could even consider alternative measures such as energy saving light bulbs to help keep us safe on the roads this winter."

UK MOTORISTS ABANDON SAT NAVS IN FAVOUR OF TRADITIONAL MAPS THIS DECEMBER

UK MOTORISTS ABANDON SAT NAVS IN FAVOUR OF TRADITIONAL MAPS THIS DECEMBER

Key stats:

40% of Brits will clock up an additional four hours driving in December
81% of UK motorists believe they can find their way to a new destination without the help of a sat nav
44% of UK drivers admit to having disagreements with their passengers over which route to take - main offenders are drivers in the North-West (47%) and East Midlands calmest only 25%
40% of Brits vote Stephen Fry as most favoured sat nav voice

15th December 2011: Over 40% of Brits will clock up an additional four hours driving in December in a bid to visit family and friends over the festive period and new research shows that we’ll be leaving the sat navs at home. Findings from the Sat Nav Study by Kia Motors found the Boy Scout approach is favoured by 81% of UK motorists; all of whom believe they can read a map and find their way without the help of a navigation system.

One third (34%) of UK motorists admitted to losing their way despite using a sat nav, demonstrating that some time-saving gadgets don’t always live up to their name. Other common reasons for abandoning the sat nav includes not leading drivers to the correct destination, frustration over usability and preferring to listen to music rather than the sat nav instructions.
If driving on busy roads, stocking the boot up with presents and packing the family into the car doesn’t bring enough stress, it would appear us Brits are also partial to the odd squabble when driving. 44% of UK drivers admit to having disagreements with their passengers over which route to take; the main offenders are drivers in the North-West, with 47% admitting to bickering with passengers, a high figure compared to the calm folk of the East Midlands, where just 25% disagree with passengers over directions.

Steve Kitson, Communications Director at Kia Motors UK Ltd. said: “Driving on UK roads in a busy December can be a big enough task for most people but with the added pressure of finding a new destination, it can be even harder. Only one-fifth (21%) of us claim to be confident enough to find our own way based on knowledge alone, and with three quarters (75%) of Brits abandoning using navigation systems this festive season let’s hope an A-Z is on the Christmas list! We are not surprised motorists are giving up on Sat Navs in favour of the traditional map; as long as drivers are safe and leave the map reading to a passenger then happy driving to all!”

Despite Sat Navs being out of favour with Brits, they would still prefer a celebrity voice to tell them where to go:

• Stephen Fry (40%)
• Ant & Dec (20%)
• Cheryl Cole (11%)
• Prince William (9%)
• Gary Barlow (8%)
• Margaret Thatcher (6%)
• Simon Cowell (5%)
• Justin Bieber (1%)

Tesco Real Food sets SOS helpline to save Christmas dinner nightmares

Tesco Real Food has set up a unique Christmas dinner SOS helpline to rescue Brits from kitchen disasters as they prepare their festive feasts.

The supermarket has pulled together a crack team of expert chefs who will be on hand to offer personalised first rate advice on how to create the perfect Christmas dinner and avoid any potential nightmares.

Anyone running into difficulties on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day will be able to contact the team via the supermarket's Twitter site to get immediate solutions to their culinary problems.

Tesco senior marketing manager Breige Donaghy said: "Imagine the scenario - your guests are due to arrive for the most celebrated meal of the year and to your horror your turkey is undercooked, your bread sauce too thick and your roasties aren’t crispy enough.

"But instead of panicking, cooks will now be able to speak to our team of expert chefs who have cooked thousands of meals between them and who know all the tricks of the trade for putting on a fabulous Christmas feast with as little stress as possible.

"We think the helpline will prove especially useful to those embarking on cooking their first ever Christmas dinner. And our experts will also be around on Christmas Eve in case anyone needs help planning the big meal."

The team will include Cordon Bleu standard chefs as well as others who have been trained by top London cooking school Leiths and other top restaurants plus those who work with Tesco to develop recipes and inspire new dishes. Their combined experience totals nearly 100 years in the food business.

The team will run two help sessions. One will offer planning and preparation tips between 10am and 8pm on Christmas Eve and the other will help solve actual cooking dilemmas on Christmas Day, between 8am and 4pm.

Anyone wanting to contact the team will need to log onto Twitter on those days and then navigate to Tesco's Real Food Online Twitter page (@tescorealfood), and send off their question. They will then be sent a tweet with a solution to their problem

Breige Donaghy added: "This is the first time that any supermarket has ever tried anything like this and if it’s a success then we will look at running similar kitchen helplines for Easter and other big occasions."

BBC iPlayer now streaming through 3G mobile networks - but know your data limits

Michael Phillips, product director at Broadbandchoices.co.uk commented:
"32% of mobile phone users access the internet through their handset so the iPlayer app update for 3G is long overdue. Watching Eastenders on the train home from work could fast become a habit for over-enthusiastic iPlayer fans, however this raises the risk of breaching data limits and incurring hefty penalty charges as a result, particularly amongst younger customers as they are the biggest users of this type of service. Most smartphones come with a data cap of around 500MB or 1GB per month, so considering that an hour of TV viewing through iPlayer will set you back around 300MB there is serious potential for some nasty bill shocks at the end of the month. Ask yourself if finding out the latest Albert Square gossip is worth data charges of £2 per MB and think twice before streaming. Check the size of each file prior to downloading or use the below guide as a rule of thumb to keep track of your usage."

ONLINE ACTIVITIES:
Watching a 3 minute music video on YouTube: 12MB
Downloading a movie of DVD quality: 1.5GB
Watching an hour of Downton Abbey on iPlayer: 300MB
Uploading a photo to send to family overseas: 2MB

Broadbandchoices.co.uk's top tips for minimising data charges:

• The right tariff for you: When choosing a mobile tariff always compare your options and keep in mind your needs as a user. If you are a heavy mobile broadband user and access the internet through your phone frequently, you will need a package that reflects this - preferably with an unlimited data allowance.

• Size matters: Before downloading or streaming any content through your mobile phone, check the size of the file beforehand to make sure you are not unwittingly breaching your data limit. Bear in mind that HD files are considerably larger than usual and will eat into your allowance.

• Make use of wi-fi: Many places now offer free wi-fi when you are on the move – from train stations to libraries or even your local Starbucks. It is worth switching to these services whenever possible as downloading through free wi-fi will not count towards your data usage and will help you stretch out your allowance for longer.

Good & Green Guides Launch iPhone Application and Gear up for 2012 Olympics and Beyond

This is an exciting milestone for us and another step forward to make credible sustainable options easy for people to find
New Sustainable Travel Guides Help People Go Green with Confidence

Good & Green Guides, new comprehensive sustainable travel guides that help inhabitants and tourists discover and enjoy the planet with care, announce the availability of the Good & Green Guides iPhone application making over 4200 rated sustainable points of interests and content from their popular Holland guides available and searchable on an iPhone.

“This is an exciting milestone for us and another step forward to make credible sustainable options easy for people to find", said Harold Verhagen, founder and publisher of Good & Green Guides. Now, more than ever, people recognize their purchasing power and want to make responsible choices. Our iPhone application offers another convenient way to search our rated content and ‘go green’ with confidence.”

The availability of the Good & Green Guide iPhone application lays the foundation for Good & Green Guide London that is slated for release in conjunction with the 2012 Olympics, with more guides planned for popular destinations throughout Europe and select cities in the United States.

A first of their kind, Good & Green Guides address the growing consumer demand for finding credible sustainable options. The criteria for what is included in a Good & Green Guide are strict, objective and transparent. Each point of interest is thoroughly researched and reviewed by local volunteers and students, then rated using the Good & Green Star System for three categories of sustainability – Good, Green and/or Great.

Today there are four Good & Green Guides available for Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam and the whole of Holland covering 19 cities throughout the Netherlands. Each of the guides offer more than 500 points of interest that are good for us and green for our environment including fair trade shops, organic markets, yoga studios, aid organizations, vegetarian restaurants, eco-fashion shops, natural cosmetic shops, green hotels, and more. 23 different categories are organized into five easy to navigate chapters:

Be 'mobile safe' this Christmas

Be 'mobile safe' this Christmas - two-thirds of users admit being worried about their phone being lost or stolen

Infographic - mobile threat trends

If it goes missing you can track its location, sound an alarm and even wipe the contents remotely

Lookout offers tips to keep your smartphone safe this Christmas

Christmas and New Year is a time to be merry and full of festive cheer. But when it comes to losing or having your mobile phone stolen, cheer can soon turn to tears, according to Lookout Mobile Security (http://www.mylookout.com/), the leader in mobile security.

In a recent survey conducted by Lookout among mobile users, around two-thirds admitted they were ‘very worried’ or ‘worried’ about their phone being lost or stolen, a figure that is set to rise as we embark on a series of parties, presents and pantomimes. A third of those questioned confessed that they could last just a couple of minutes to a couple of hours if their phone was lost or stolen – 10 per cent couldn’t survive at all!

While most expressed serious concerns over the safety of their phones and what is on them, very few actually do anything to protect them, according to Lookout’s research. More than 85 per cent have no way of tracking a lost or stolen phone, 60 per cent do not use a PIN or passcode and 74 per cent do not regularly back up personal contacts and information.

With less than two weeks to go until the ‘big day’, Lookout has provided some simple tips on how to keep your mobile safe during the Christmas and New Year holiday period:

• Be crowd-aware – if you are at a Christmas party, in a busy shop or running around town on public transport, keep your phone tucked deep in your bag or in a zipped pocket out of sight.

• Lock the door – set a password, PIN or a handset lock on your phone to make it difficult for anyone to use it if you lose it.

• Secure & protect – use a free mobile security app like Lookout to safeguard your phone. If it goes missing you can track its location, sound an alarm and even wipe the contents remotely. Download Lookout in the Android Market or App Store.

• Think before you download – One of the most exciting things to do with your smartphone is explore all the great applications you can download onto it. But, as you explore make sure you only download apps from sites you trust, check the app’s rating and read the reviews to make sure it is widely used and respected.

• Don’t go public – Public Wifi networks are everywhere – coffee shops, train stations, cafes, etc – but security for these networks is not. Be careful what you do on public Wifi, and in particular use extra caution when shopping and mobile banking unless you’re confident you have a secure connection.
